The RNYC Junior Learn To Sail Program offers 4 Levels of certified instruction for ages starting from 5 to 8. The Program follows the Sail Canada CANSail module created to ensure stndardized sailing instruction across Canada. Through our Junior Sailing day camps we offer certified instruction for CANSail levels 1 through 4. The program provides safe, challenging, and educational sailing instruction while promoting seamanship, sportsmanship, and fostering a lifelong love of sailing.






Wetfeet – (Ages 5-8)

The Wet Feet experience is designed to help young sailors feel comfortable on the water, and to experience the sport of sailing in the most positive way. Each group has a maximum of six participants, allowing close and supportive coaching and supervision.

CANSail 1 – Introduction to Sailing

CANSail 1 teaches sailors the fundamental sailing skills including basic sheeting, steering, and boat handling on all points of sail. Sailors can sail within defined boundaries set by an instructor.

CANSail 2 – Basic Sailing

CANSail 2 teaches sailors to adjust their bodies and boats for changes in direction and wind speed while sailing, and to perform boat-handling manoeuvers in a controlled manner while in a controlled setting.

CANSail 3 – Intermediate Sailing

CANSail 3 teaches sailors to integrate the fundamental boat handling manoeuvers and balance with basic tactics and strategy as well as applied sail trim. Sailors are exposed to a greater variety of conditions and participate in a club race or club training camp.

CANSail 4 – Advanced Sailing

CANSail 4 teaches sailors to perform advanced boat handling manoeuvers in a variety of conditions. Sailors can successfully execute manoeuvers in competitive settings and for tactical and strategic purposes. Sailors participate in a one to two-day local regatta.

sailing apparel What to Bring - Sailing Equipment & Apparel

Maritime weather varies quickly and temperatures are often significantly cooler than onshore. For comfort and safety particpants are required to dress and equip themselves appropriately.

You MUST have:

  • Government approved PFD (Personal Floatation Device)
  • Skid-proof deck shoes, white sole tennis shoes, or sailing boots*
  • Waterproof/windproof jacket and pants OR wetsuit (preferred)
  • Fleece underlayer (if no wetsuit)

*No sandals, flip-flops, open-toed shoes, or black soles.

You SHOULD have:

  • Hat that won’t blow off
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Swimsuit
  • Change of clothes
  • Towel
  • Water bottle
  • Lunch or Lunch Order Form

Jumpstart Program

The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program gives financial assistance to families for one or more children 4 - 18 years to participate in programs of sports or physical activity including sailing. To be eligible families must first meet specific financial criteria as per Revenue Canada’s Low-Income Cut-Offs (LICO) chart.

Kidsport Program

KidSport provides grants to kids from families facing financial barriers so they can participate in registered sport programs and experience the lifelong benefits of a season of sport. KidSport Newfoundland and Labrador provides grants of up to $300 per eligible kid, per year (January 1st - December 31st) towards sport registration and equipment fees.
